The occupants of a silver Chevrolet Lumina arrested after a shoot-out with the Sandton SAPS on Tuesday last week, can be linked to several cases of robbery in Edenvale.
The acting spokesperson for the Edenvale SAPS, Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts, said the same vehicle and occupants was reported to have been involved in several robberies in Edenvale recently.
The most recent robbery by the men in Edenvale occurred on April 17 at the Stoneridge Shopping Centre.
In one of the cases, the men waited outside a fast food restaurant in Greenstone for 30 minutes while their victims were inside.
“Once outside, the men accosted their victims and robbed them of valuables,” said Lt Col Roberts.
According to the Provincial SAPS, a police officer spotted the vehicle which was suspected to have been involved in an armed robbery, on Rivonia Road last week.
When the officer tried to stop the vehicle, the occupants sped off and collided with several other vehicles before the driver lost control and crashed.
One of the vehicle occupants then opened fire at police officers while three others attempted to flee.
Police officers returned fire, killing one of the suspects. Two other suspects were wounded and a third was arrested without injury.
One police officer was also wounded in the shootout.
Police officers confiscated three firearms and one cellular phone from the men.
“Detectives from the Edenvale SAPS will work with officers from the Sandton SAPS to link the men to other cases,” said Lt Col Roberts.
