Malvern residents meet
Malvern residents held a meeting to discuss issues that affect them most.
The meeting took place on the corner of Perssimon and Heriot streets in Malvern on April 10.
The meeting was chaired by resident and community leader, Mr Wilton Cele.
The meeting was well attended considering it was held on the street corner.
A number of issues were discussed including street committees. Two residents were selected to co-ordinate a street committee.
Ms Mavis Moloto and Mr NP Mpungose were given the responsibility of making sure that the committees are functional.
The meeting focused on the expectations of residents and what they needed changed in their community. Residents mentioned the lack street lights as a contributing factor to the crime in the area.
Street patrollers were suggested as a solution to the crime in the area.
“We hope to engage the municipality with a view of assisting us with the street patrollers. They will need support going forward,” said Mr Cele.
Residents were urged not to wait for the municipality and to start doing things themselves.
“We must take responsibility for our surroundings because we are the ones who stay here. Waiting does not solve anything, we need a proactive approach,” said Mr Mpungose.
The residents agreed to hold meetings more regularly in order to get to know each other. “It is important to know your neighbour,” said Mr Cele.
