Drinks spiked at night club

"He said it also felt as though his face was falling off."

Youngsters are urged to be cautious when visiting nightclubs.

This comes after the drink of a young man was ‘spiked’ when he visited a popular nightclub in Boksburg recently.

Spiking is when a drug is added to a person’s drink, usually without that person’s knowledge or consent.

According to the young man’s mother, who asked to remain anonymous, her son was out with friends when she received a phone call.

Her son’s friends had rushed him to hospital after he started acting strangely.

“He said it also felt as though his face was falling off. His friends thought he was just drunk, so they said they would take him home. But when they stepped outside the venue, he collapsed,” the mother said.

She added that her son then starting swearing and became aggressive.

“His friends said he then started to cry. That is when they called me and said they were taking him to hospital,” the mother said.

After visiting two hospitals, it was found he had been drugged, possibly with Ketamine.

“As a parent, this is the most awful thing to experience and thank goodness he did not have to be hospitalised,” she said.

The young man later discussed his symptoms with a friend, who had also been drugged at the same nightclub just three days earlier.

The acting spokesperson for the Edenvale SAPS, Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts, urged parents to inform their children about the dangers that lurk at nightclubs.

“We ask all youngsters to be responsible when visiting clubs. Do not trust strangers and do not accept drinks offered from anyone,” said Lt Col Roberts.

He advised youngsters to, whenever possible, buy drinks which are already bottled.

“Never accept open drinks from anyone,” said Lt Col Roberts.
