Think twice before buying stolen property
The theft of metal is rife in the Jeppe and Cleveland SAPS precincts. Members of the public requested that the SAPS take action against those caught stealing metal and people caught buying and selling these items.
Members of the community have been urged to think twice before buying stolen property.
At a recent Kensington Crime Forum meeting, Sergeant Patrick Tefu from the Jeppe SAPS, said people who are caught will face the consequences.
“Stop buying stolen items from people. If they cannot produce the relevant documentation, you should refrain from buying these goods. Maybe the owner of these goods was killed for them,” he said.
Sgt Tefu said police officers are visiting second hand goods shops in the precinct and will continue closing those found operating illegally or selling stolen items. This includes businesses selling scrap metal.

Warrant Officer Richard Munyai, the Jeppe SAPS communications officer, previously told the EXPRESS that police officers are dealing with the scrapyards in the precinct. He said meetings are conducted with scrap metal dealers and businesses are visited regularly to see if they are complying with the rules and regulations.
At the public meeting held recently in Kensington, Sgt Tefu also urged residents to beware of businesses selling second hand cellular phones. “If the owners cannot produce a proof of purchase or receipt, we will take action against them as well,” he said.
