Hurlyvale Primary hosts action-packed U13 rugby tournament

The touch rugby fixtures included teams from Hurlyvale, Bedfordview and Wendywood, as well as a scheduled Old Girls versus Coaches match.

Hurlyvale Primary School recently hosted a fun-filled morning of junior rugby action, with schools from across the area taking part in the Hurlyvale U13 Rugby Tournament and Girls Touch Rugby festival.

Held at the start of August, the tournament ran from 08:00 to 13:30 and featured U13 rugby, alongside a dedicated girls’ touch rugby programme.

The rugby tournament consisted of two pools, with matches played on one field before the top teams progressed to the semi-finals and final.

The U13 competition saw Hurlyvale field two teams, with Hurlyvale A drawn in Pool A alongside Bedfordview, Alberview and Reddam.

Pool B featured Hurlyvale B, Wendywood, Montrose and Edenglen.

Teams were limited to 15 players on the field, with squads capped at 23 players.

The tournament rules stipulated that no U14 players were allowed to participate. Matches consisted of 15-minute halves, with three points awarded for a win and one for a draw. Should teams finish level on points, try difference was used to determine the standings.

The opening match was scheduled for 08:00, with Hurlyvale Primary School U11 taking on BPS U11 before the U13 pool fixtures got underway.

The pool stages continued throughout the morning, with the semi-finals, bronze play-offs and the finals scheduled for later in the day.

Hurlyvale Eagles won the tournament.

Alongside the rugby tournament, the school hosted a girls’ touch rugby festival. Teams consisted of six players, with squads limited to 12 players and participants aged between 11 and 14. Matches lasted 15 minutes, with rolling substitutions and normal touch rugby laws in effect.

The girls’ competition followed a festival format, with the emphasis on participation rather than results.
Scores were not kept, and Hurlyvale referees officiated the matches.
