Information regarding criminal activities requested
Residents with information regarding criminals who are targeting people at Rhodes Park are urged to come forward.
Visitors are being robbed of their belongings by people in possession of firearms.
According to Warrant Officer Marx Crouse, from the Cleveland SAPS, there are two criminals the SAPS is aware of who operate in the park. “A man was robbed of his cellular phone and wallet early in May. There is a new group of criminals operating there and people should be careful,” he said.
He was speaking at a recent Kensington Crime Forum meeting.
Robberies in and around Rhodes Park have decreased over the past couple months. This was as a result of several arrests and a man being sentenced to prison.
Some of the previous crimes included two children who were attacked while on their way to school.
Police officers were contacted and they found one of the suspects in the park.
A local school also issued a warning to children using the park as a short cut or relaxing there.
This came after pupils raised concerns about being followed or robbed. Some pupils felt they were going to be abducted.
Residents requested that Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) step up security measures while others asked for more visibility from the SAPS.
The JCPZ fixed fencing around the park and the Cleveland SAPS made arrests for crimes committed in and around the park.
The Cleveland SAPS continues to patrol the park and has increased its visibility to make further arrests.
