EMM stuck without petrol

On Wednesday last week, a portion of fuel from various fire stations was handed to other departments.

Last week several municipal departments were forced to let their vehicles stand as a fuel crisis hit the municipality.

One council employee, who asked to remain anonymous, feared the crisis could last until July.

“We do not have petrol or diesel,” he said.

On Wednesday last week, a portion of fuel from various fire stations was handed to other departments.

“The fire stations cannot give any more fuel away because it will be needed for emergency vehicles,” the employee said.

He added that the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) had to let several of its vehicles stand on Thursday.

“They had to save fuel in case of an emergency, so there were no patrols,” he said.

According to the brand and communications department of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM), council is up to date in terms of the payment for the services rendered by the service provider.

“There are no outstanding amounts, only the recent invoices for deliveries. These are being processed,” the department said in reply to an enquiry sent by the NEWS.

The department also stated in its response that the situation with the fuel was serious.

“A meeting was held on Thursday with the service provider to look into the matter and a commitment was made that fuel would be delivered by Friday morning.”
