Security guard for rape hotspot
“Rape is a serious and destructive crime, unfortunately it has made its way into our community".
Green Valley Shopping Centre has taken the safety of its community seriously.
Following a mother’s plea after her daughter was raped in the field next to Palliser and Aitken roads, the centre has undertaken to place a security guard next to the field.
“Rape is a serious and destructive crime, unfortunately it has made its way into our community,” said Mr Damian Testa, the managing director for Nevada Group.
He added that the Green Valley Shopping Centre, based within the Greenstone community, decided to take action.
The centre has undertaken to place a security guard at the intersection for a month.
He will be armed with a panic button linked to a 24 hour security control room.
“If any person feels unsafe while walking past the area, they can contact the security guard for assistance. We feel it is about time shopping centres get involved in their communities and we are leading the way with this act,” said Mr Testa.
“Together we can take back our community from the criminals. If you walk this route often, remember to be vigilant and never walk alone. Let people know where you are and do not be distracted,” he added.
Anyone who feels unsafe or who notices anything untoward, can report it to the Green Valley control room on 087 150 3303.
Long term plans for the area include permanent lighting as well as security cameras.
