Vagrants return to businesses

The Queen Street vagrants have made a come-back.

Sergeant Marius Boolsen, from the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), said officers chased a minimum of 25 vagrants off verandas and other parts of business premises recently.

It was previously reported in the EXPRESS that some vagrants were allegedly threatening to assault and rape women while others were intimidating business owners in Queen Street, Kensington.

A Queen Street business owner, who did not want his name published, pleaded for a permanent solution before a life was lost.

He said the brazen vagrants made use of their premises throughout the night and were threatening when owners and staff returned to work in the mornings.

He also said he had to wash off excrement, urine, vomit, bits of glue and pick up papers and food left overs before opening his business.

The JMPD did attend to the problem and it was quiet for some time. However, the vagrants returned, creating further hassles for business owners.

During a recent Cleveland Community Police Forum meeting, Sgt Boolsen said they are attending to the problem.
