Domestic workers learn about fires
“Too many horror stories have been told through negligence, not knowing any better or just by accident."
The Bedfordview Domestic Workers Forum meeting took place at the Bedford Chapel in Bedfordview on July 23.
The meeting was aimed at creating awareness about fire and fire prevention.
According to Ms Penny Steyn of the Domestic Watch and SAPS Customer Service Training, “Too many horror stories have been told through negligence, not knowing any better or just by accident.
“Nobody is immune to having their home burnt down, my own home nearly burnt to the ground a year back. Families never recover when someone dies in a fire, but the results of fire are devastating even if no one dies”.
“Almost 55 percent of all fire deaths are as a result of house fires occurring in developed urban areas and 25 percent of fire deaths occur in developed township areas, yet only 18 percent of fire deaths occur in undeveloped urban areas,” said Ms Steyn.
“It is important for domestic workers to know about fires and the various ways they could avoid them,” said Ms Steyn. @BedfordJourno
