Home Affairs urges couples to register customary marriages before deadline
Couples who have not yet registered their customary marriages have until August 31 to regularise their marital status and avoid delays as the deadline approaches.
The Department of Home Affairs has urged couples who have not yet registered their customary marriages to do so before the special registration period closes on August 31.
The registration process allows couples to regularise their marital status and applies to customary marriages concluded before the Recognition of Customary Marriages Act came into effect in November 2000, as well as those concluded afterwards but not registered within the required timeframe.
The department encouraged qualifying couples to register as soon as possible to avoid long queues as the deadline approaches.

“This includes marriages concluded before the Recognition of Customary Marriages Act came into effect in November 2000, as well as those concluded thereafter but not registered within the required timeframe,” the department said.

The department also urged traditional leaders, community leaders and civil society organisations to help raise awareness and ensure affected couples are aware of the approaching deadline.
