What’s up in the Modderfontein Reserve

Reserve manager, Mr Luke Strugnell of the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT), will give an illustrated talk on the changes that have taken place in the reserve over the past year.

A massive programme to overcome invasive alien trees and shrubs in the Modderfontein Reserve will be one of the topics at the next evening meeting of the Modderfontein Conservation Society (MCS).

The meeting will be held at 7.30pm on August 21 at the Modderfontein Town Hall.

Reserve manager, Mr Luke Strugnell of the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT), will give an illustrated talk on the changes that have taken place in the reserve over the past year.

He will review the challenges he has faced including raging veld fires and the rewards that result from overcoming some of the problems he encounters in the day-to-day management of the area.

One of Mr Strugnell’s priorities in the reserve is to eradicate alien invasive vegetation.

He and his team have made major inroads in this area over the past year.

The establishment of new parking and picnicking facilities, the planting of thousands of indigenous trees and shrubs and the building of bridges have kept Mr Strugnell and his team fully occupied.

The official opening of the new Baben Bridge over the Modderfontein Spruit in November last year was one of the highlights.

Mr Leon Baben has spent the majority of his working life in Modderfontein working towards a cleaner, safer and healthier environment.

“Naming the bridge after him is a fitting tribute for the work he has done here in the Modderfontein Reserve,” said Mr Strugnell.

The formalisation of a new education centre in the reserve is nearing completion and the definition and marking of walking trails is also well underway.

Visitors are welcome to attend this talk.
