JMPD commended for action

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) was commended for attending to problems with vagrants in Kensington.

For some time now, vagrants have been aggravating Queen Street business owners by making use of their properties and leaving the surroundings in a mess.

The EXPRESS previously reported that some vagrants were allegedly threatening to assault and rape women while others were intimidating business owners.

One business owner, who did not want his name published, said vagrants make use of their premises throughout the night and are threatening when owners and staff returned to work in the mornings.

He also said he had to wash off excrement, urine, vomit, bits of glue and papers. He also had to remove left over food before opening his business.

Speaking at a recent Cleveland Community Police Forum (CCPF) meeting, Mrs Lornette Joseph, the chairperson of the I Love Kensington Association (Ilka), thanked the JMPD for its action.

“A Queen Street business owner asked the association to thank the JMPD and Cleveland SAPS at this meeting for the action taken. They appreciate what has been done,” she said.

Although numerous operations have been held, the vagrants are persistent and continue to return. However, the JMPD is constantly in the area trying to attend to the problem.

Sergeant Marius Boolsen, from the JMPD, said the authority is trying its best.

“Over 20 vagrants were chased away. We visited the area several times and will continue doing so,” he said.
