SAPS seeks information on murder

No arrests have been made in connection with a murder that took place in Kensington and people with information are urged to come forward.

Last month the EXPRESS published that one man was killed in what was believed to be a business robbery in Kensington. The man was shot in a shop at a filling station.

Constable Mpho Mashakane, the Cleveland SAPS communications officer, said police officers went to the filling station after receiving information about a shooting that had just taken place.

She said that on arrival, they found one man lying on the floor. He had sustained a bullet wound. According to her, the manager said three suspects entered the shop at the filling station and demanded money. They shot one of the customers.

Paramedics were called to the scene and the man was certified dead.

The suspects took money and fled.

Colonel Bongani Dlamini, the Cleveland SAPS station commander, said police officers are working on the case. He was speaking at a recent Kensington Sector Security Forum meeting.

“We are doing all we can as the police to make arrests. These criminals have been terrorising people. If you have information, please share with us. We are not trying to scare the community but the people need to be vigilant. There has also been a spike in hijackings locally. We are trying to address this,” said Col Dlamini.

He said people should look at their surroundings before entering their properties. Residents should also inform street guards to alert the SAPS about crime.

“If you do not have street committees, establish one. Get street guards. They are a crime deterrent. A lot of the streets being targeted at the moment are streets without guards,” said Col Dlamini.

He urged people to attend the Cleveland Community Police Forum meeting. The next meeting takes place tonight, September 2, at the Cleveland SAPS. The meeting starts at 6.30pm.
