Queens High School in Kensington recently hosted an awards ceremony for the IsiZulu Spelling and Prepared Speech competition.

The purpose of the competition is to promote indigenous languages, to credit and encourage pupils to study an African language.

The Pan South African Language Board (PANSALB) gave incentives to the top 10 pupils in support of this drive. Pupils were also informed of the bursaries available for language students.

The University of South Africa (UNISA) and other higher institutions were also part of the competition, which was open to grade 8 to 11 pupils.

This initiative is designed to prepare pupils for the tertiary level after the call made by Minister Blade Nzimande, who suggested that an African language may be necessary for university students to get their undergraduate degrees.

The overall winner of the competition was Thobeka Mthethwa, from Dalpark Secondary School. Second position went to Andile Mtshali from St Endas Secondary School and third place went to Thulebona Gamede from Highlands North Boys High School.

Pupils were awarded medals and certificates for their achievements.
