Animation Generation, the unique and exciting nationwide initiative from Cartoon Network, celebrated its ninth edition in 2014 with a record-breaking 16 253 entries.
The competition seeks to promote the art of illustration in schools and celebrates the imagination of many talented young South Africans by encouraging them to create their own cartoon character.
The theme for this year’s Animation Generation was the action-packed Ben 10: Omniverse.
In the television series, to aid his continuing battle to save the world from evil extra-terrestrials, Ben is able to transform into a multitude of alien life forms using his watch-like Omnitrix.
The competition asked entrants to conceive and design a new alien transformation for the hugely popular cartoon, incorporating their character into a colourful drawing.
2014 also marked the first year for digital entries, which opened up the competition to all young students across South Africa and contributed to the huge popularity of this year’s campaign.
In the 12-14 age group category, Aliham Kartel from Bedfordview Primary won third place. He takes home an Ipod and his own Cartoon Network hamper.
“The aim of Cartoon Network’s Animation Generation is to give pupils the opportunity to let their imaginations run wild. We understand the integral role that creativity plays in the physical, social and emotional development of children worldwide. The entries we received this year were original, imaginative and of a truly exceptional standard,” said Mr Pierre Branco, the vice president for Southern Europe and Africa for the Turner Broadcasting System.
