New skills on show

The Edenvale Paint & Palette Group will host renowned sculptor and painter, Ms Olga van Wyk, on November 15 at the Edenvale Community Centre.
Ms van Wyk will demonstrate her work, starting with making moulds, casting as well as painting the finish in oils.
She specialises in the art of creating European cage doll mannequins, based on an age-old tradition dating as far back as the 13th century.
Having majored in ceramics at Wits in 1981, she has worked many years in the industry, before exploring resin further as a full time artist.
Her cage mannequins are set in period dress with the faces expressing concern and experiences, either in herself or others that she observes.
“I am always aware that behind every doll’s still pose and distant gaze, there is primal ‘woundedness’ that strikes deep in the heart of every human person. I attempt to present the figures in the quiet grace and strength of those that trust in the powerful healing of the word,” she said.
Ms van Wyk’s work is inspired by the Renaissance and Elizabethan periods, but she also does work on a more commercial range.
Members of the community are invited to attend.
The event starts at 2pm but attendees are encouraged to arrive as early as 1.30pm.
The entrance fee is R50 for visitors and R20 for members.
