Hammer killer gets 18 years in jail

Last year the police received a call that Msimango had struck Nkosiyehlule Mkhize with a hammer while he was asleep.

Mbongiseni Msimango (46) has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for murdering his nephew with a hammer in September 2013.

The Jeppe SAPS communications officer, Warrant Officer Richard Munyayi, said the Johannesburg High Court sentenced Msimango on October 21 this year.

He added that last year the police received a call that Msimango had struck Nkosiyehlule Mkhize with a hammer while he was asleep.

“The incident happened on Friday 20, 2013 at a property on Wolhuter Street in Jeppestown. It is believed Mkhize was sleeping when Msimango hit him with a hammer. The victim was struck on the head. He was taken to hospital where he later died,” said W/O Monyayi.

He added that after receiving the news about the death of Mkhize, the family apprehended Msimango and took him to the police station.

“Msimango was arrested and charged with murder. He appeared in the Johannesburg Regional Court. The case was later postponed and moved to the Johannesburg High Court, where he was sentenced,” said W/O Monyayi.
