Music maker retires

Edenvale resident and entertainer, Roy Hudson (78), has retired from being the DJ at the popular club, Separatists.

Roy has lived in Edenvale for over 40 years.

He was born in Nelson, Lancashire, and lived a 30 minute drive away from where the Beetles used to play at The Cavern in Liverpool.

Roy is a sound engineer by profession and worked at the BBC in north England.

In 1969 he moved to South Africa to work for the SABC.

While working his day job, Roy’s love of music and dancing led him to the decision of becoming a DJ.

Audio 2000 was started in 1976, while Roy played for Dee’s Exclusive Club on a Saturday night at the Devonshire Hotel, Braamfontein.

Roy also played at the Old President Hotel, the Aster Ball Room which is now the Senator Hotel.

He went on to play at many, if not all, the top hotels and venues around Johannesburg, including the Carlton Hotel and the Casa Mia.

In 1982 Roy was asked to DJ at the Separatists Club at the Hong Kong Restaurant.

Roy soon became a committee member of the club and, following his proposal, brought the Separatists Club to Jeppe Quondam.

For the last 28 years, the club has been based at Jeppe Quondam.

In December, after 32 years as the DJ at Separatists, Roy has hung up his turntables, records and microphone.

Roy was presented with a trophy for 32 years’ service.

Separatists Social Dance Club, now in its 44th year, is the oldest and longest running social dance club in South Africa.
