Sacred Heart swimmers shine

Sacred Heart College's swimming team coach, Cindy Niken, expects the school's swimming team to continue its winning ways in the up-coming inter-high gala.

The gala was held at the JCE Pool at the Wits Parktown Campus on Tuesday, March 3.

Niken said the school participated in the A league of division 2.

“The incentive to perform optimally at this gala lies in the fact that swimmers who are placed first or second in an individual event, and teams placed first in a relay event, qualify to attend the Prestige gala,” she said.

Niken added that the Prestige gala will be held at the Ellis Park Swimming Pool on Tuesday, March 10.

“I have no doubt that Sacred Heart College will be represented at this gala. I am proud of each and every swimmer and what they have achieved this season,” she said.

According to Niken, the team has performed will this season.

“Our team’s first league gala took place on Thursday, January 22, and was hosted by Greenside High School. The college faced some tough competition, but emerged victorious out of the six competing schools,” she said.

She added that 21 of the school’s swimmers completed the Midmar Mile, with six swimmers taking part for the first time.

The league season continued when Queen’s High School hosted the second league gala on Thursday, February 12.

Niken said Sacred Heart College was placed second at the end of the competition.

The team will also take part in the annual inter-Catholic gala.

“For the past two years, the gala has been divided into two leagues. The college has participated in the B league. This year’s competition was demanding, but the swimmers’ spirits never dwindled. Of the seven participating boys’ schools, Sacred Heart College finished joint in third place. Of the six participating girls’ schools, the college placed second. Out of the 5 co-educational schools participating, Sacred Heart College finished first,” said Niken.

She added that during the penultimate league gala on February 19, hosted by Glenvista High School, her team scooped third place.

The Sacred Heart College swimming team finished second overall during a gala held on February 24.
