Dog finds new home after hit-and-run

"SPCA Sandton did not have the funds to pay the veterinary hospital for the operation and my wife and son were told they would have to find the funds to pay for the operation," said Mr Jardim.

A dog has found a new, loving home after it sustained injuries in a hit-and-run in Kensington on January 16.

The animal was struck by a car in Albertina Sisulu Road in Kensington. According to witnesses, the driver of the vehicle drove away, leaving the dog with a broken hip and leg.

Mr Tony Jardim said the Sandton SPCA was called and they came out and caught the dog in 7th Avenue. The dog was taken to the Parktown Veterinary Hospital.

“My wife Dorothy, and my son Brendan, were really saddened by the whole incident. They phoned the SPCA later that night and they were referred to the Parktown Veterinary Hospital. The veterinarian on duty said they would clean the dog’s wounds, treat the animal but that it did not look good. They would either have to amputate the leg or put the dog down,” said Mr Jardim.

“SPCA Sandton did not have the funds to pay the veterinary hospital for the operation and my wife and son were told they would have to find the funds to pay for the operation,” said Mr Jardim.

Mrs Dorothy Jardim said she was really taken by the dog and after she was told that there was no money to pay for the operation, Dorothy and her son Brendan took to Facebook requesting donations.

“We managed to raise about R3 500, and even though it was not enough for the operation, it made a huge difference,” said Mrs Jardim.

The amputation was done and the lovely female dog recovered at the SPCA in Sandton. The animal received therapy and after the rehabilitation was complete, the female dog was put up for adoption.

Mrs Jardim continued to follow-up weekly with the SPCA to find out if the dog had been adopted.

On March 30, the SPCA informed her that the dog was adopted and had found a new home.

“A big thank you to all the people who opened their hearts to this worthy cause,” said Mrs Jardim.

Mrs Jardim urged dog owners to be vigilant and to make sure that when they open any gates, their dogs don’t get out.
