Importance of staying calm highlighted

While taking his dogs to an Edenvale park recently, Vaughn came across a vehicle fire.

Staying calm in a possible crisis situation is something that comes naturally for emergency services Chaplain, Vaughn Grantham.

While taking his dogs to an Edenvale park recently, Vaughn came across a vehicle fire.

“A resident was trying to douse the flames with a garden hose, while another had left the scene to fetch a fire extinguisher from a nearby filling station,” said Vaughn.

He took over the hose and fought the fire from another angle until the resident returned with the fire extinguisher.

Within minutes, the fire was completely extinguished.

“Always stay calm,” Vaughn advised residents.

He added that when making an emergency call, residents should supply the relevant call centre with the exact details of what is happening around them.

“Always give the right address and speak calmly to the person taking the call. If you are panicked, you may give the call centre the wrong information,” said Vaughn.

It is advisable that motorists carry a fire extinguisher in their vehicle, as well as reflective vest and triangles.
