Residents pull together to help xenophobia victims

Residents took to Facebook to commend each other on the work done.

Bedfordview residents came out in large numbers to help foreign nationals who were displaced during the recent xenophobic attacks.

The ward 20 councillor, Clr Jill Humphreys, thanked the community as well as businesses and non-profit organisations, that heeded the call to action.

While some residents collected necessities from the Bedfordview Methodist Church in Bedfordview, others volunteered to prepare meals from ingredients donated by residents at the Primsrose Methodist Church, where some of the victims are being housed.

Residents took to Facebook to commend each other on the work done.

A post from Mr George Thomas Woods read, “Xenophobia update. Thank you to all who have been so generous with your time and donations. We have received the go ahead to ramp down our efforts and won’t be required to supply Primrose any longer. The folks living in the camp will either be moved to safer locations or some of them have opted to go home. Our community has been extraordinary in support and we have been able to show that the majority of South Africans are kind and caring. Your support has been invaluable.”

Sharing the same sentiment was Ms Samantha Labuschagne who posted, “Thank you to Bedfordview residents and King Edward Prep staff and parents. We have been able to supply more than 2 000 meals thanks to your generosity.”

Upon thanking her residents, Clr Humphreys proposed a meet and greet for all those who were involved in lending a helping hand.

“When there is a chance, it would be great to meet so many of our Basically Bedfordview angels. How about a date at one of our lovely Bedfordview coffee shops? Anyone available to arrange?” she posted on the Basically Bedfordview Facebook page.
