Six people held captive for a week in basement

“We investigated and found six people locked in a basement. The victims were guarded by three men."

Three men, who are in their 20s, were arrested for kidnapping and robbery on June 11 in Yeoville.

The Yeoville SAPS communications officer, Constable Thabo Malatji, said the SAPS made the arrests after officers received information about a kidnapping.

“We investigated and found six people locked in a basement. The victims were guarded by three men and were at a basement flat at the corner of Ellies and Bezuitenhout streets, .

“The men were aged 21, 23 and 26. The six people told the police they boarded a taxi from Mesina to Johannesburg. When they arrived here, the driver and his crew demanded they pay R4 000 each before they could be released.

“The victims did not have the money and they were then ordered to contact their families to deposit the money through the money market. They were told they would not be released if the money was not deposited,” said Const Malatji.

He said the six people were held captive for a week before the SAPS received the report of the kidnapping.
