Community midwife remembered

Loved midwife dies.

The much-loved midwife, Ms Martha Mattie Susana Groenewald (96), died on July 2.

She was formerly known as Ms Cramer by her patients.

She was married to Mr Oberholzer and trained as a general nurse at the Johannesburg General Hospital.

In 1946, she started working as a nurse and a midwife at the hospital. This is where she taught midwifery for three years.

She worked in several places, includin Germiston, Elsburg, Wadeville, Alberton, Primrose, Wychwood, Edenvale and Bedfordview.

One of the highlights of her career was when she started a baby clinic in Bedfordview in 1969.

Ms Cramer and Sister Doris Ntika opened the clinic together. According to a previously published article, Ms Cramer said the clinic was running well as mothers from around the East Rand came to the clinic.

With her experience of midwifery, she delivered between 4 000 and 5 000 babies.

She also helped mothers who opted for home births.

Ms Cramer was at her happiest when she met the children who she once took responsibility for. She also had three children of her own; Nicolean, Eddie and Mariana.
