Madge talks about working with Madiba

Madge once knew, and worked with, Nelson Mandela.

Ms Madge De Villiers (89), a resident at the Edenvale Retirement Home, shared her story about how she knew former president Nelson Mandela.

Madge told the NEWS that she had worked with Madiba many years ago in Kimberly.

She expressed that she was working for a legal office where Madiba had been the “messenger”.

She said he was truly a gentlemen and showed great quality in everything he did.

“Madiba was not like any other messenger I used to work with. His dress code was always formal with a suit and tie.

“He was well mannered and spoke beautifully,” said Madge.

“I worked with Madiba for three years. He used to take my summonses to court. During lunch time he used to discover and discuss politics with a colleague.

“He was studying at the time,” she said.

“He will be honored and remembered for a very long time. He was a man of many wonderful things,” said Madge.

Her daughter, Ms Laura Di Blasio, said her mom told her the story of her time she worked with Madiba for many years.

“My mom was lucky to have worked with him in the magistrates court,” said Laura.
