Theft out of motor vehicle remains a challenge in Bedfordview

He said as far as theft of motor vehicles were concerned, shopping centers were hotspots.

Although the Bedfordview SAPS policing precinct does not struggle with theft of motor vehicles, theft out of motor vehicle remains a challenge.

This is according to the station commander, Colonel Sevha Shiburi.

He told residents attending a community meeting hosted by the Bedfordview Community Policing Forum (BCPF) last Tuesday that the station had received numerous reported cases.

“The problem, however, comes in when our people report false cases. You may find at times that an incident took place in Midrand, but the victim will report it to us in order to claim from their insurance company. That is wrong and we will arrest you for perjury,” said Col Shiburi.

He said as far as theft of motor vehicles were concerned, shopping centers were hotspots.

“What we have also noticed is that the Toyota Hilux is the most targeted in those areas. We also implore our people to make sure their cars are locked when walking away from them. Mobilise the car guard you find there. Speak to them. In most cases we find that these car guards know more than we think,” said Col Shiburi.

Meanwhile, during his address, Col Shiburi said his station was winning the war against murders and attempted murders.

He said his officers are also working hard to monitor the N3 freeway.

“The N3 is difficult to police, but we are working hard to get law and order in that area as well,” Col Shiburi told residents.

Meanwhile, in the Sebenza SAPS policing precinct, the VW Polo is among some of the most stolen vehicles followed by Toyota vehicles.

The Sebenza SAPS spokesperson, Constable Sharon Tsotsotso, said in most incidents, the cars are stolen from owners’ homes.

“We urge motorists to make sure their cars are kept in locked properties. Make sure you have a tracking device installed in your vehicle,” she said.
