Bruma Lake rehabilitation nearly complete

The Bruma Lake rehabilitation project followed years of complaints from residents and businesses about the bad smell emanating from the lake.

Bruma Lake is closer to becoming a recreational park.

The second phase of landscaping is nearly complete, after the project kicked off in June last year.

The first phase included draining the lake and drying the silt. The Jukskei River was diverted from the centre of the lake, giving way to the construction of the channel.

The Bruma Lake rehabilitation project followed years of complaints from residents and businesses about the bad smell emanating from the lake.

The water contamination was caused by washing powder, motor oil, sewage, litter and other debris flowing into the lake from the Jukskei River.

Providing an update on the latest development regarding the upgrade, ward 118 councillor, Clr Mike Spadino, said the refurbishing of the lake is nearing an end now.

“The grass is being laid and and we await the arrival of outdoor furniture. The contractor is refurbishing the pillars of the bridge as this is an important, iconic feature of the area.

“It has some sentimental value to most of the residents. It has been standing since the 1980s, so the originality of the bridge will be retained. Bruma Lake affected a number of businesses in the area, especially the Bruma Lifestyle Centre, because of the bad smell. Business owners now hope the rehabilitation of the lake will turn things around for the centre,” said Clr Spadino.
