Sewer blockage cleared

Access to manholes was made difficult by the overgrown spruit area and steep slopes.

The sewer blockage along the river between Terrace Road and Diagonal Road in Eastleigh was cleared on Tuesday, August 25.

This comes after the NEWS published an article stating that neighbours of the small river had complained to the municipality about the smell over the past few weeks without receiving any help.

Ms Jodi Chandler, the sales administrator of Weblor Springs Coatings Distribution, said the municipality failed to fix the sewage leak running into the small river.

“We contacted the municipality three times. The first time, a group of workers came through, took a look through the fence and said they were unable to reach the river. They said they would have to find another way in,” said Ms Chandler.

Responding to the NEWS, the Ekurhueni Metropolitan Municipality’s spokesperson, Mr Themba Gadebe, said access to manholes was made difficult by the overgrown spruit area and steep slopes.

“We eventually found a manhole which could be reached by the combo unit and cleared the blockage,”said Mr Gadebe.
