Editor off to jail
Failure to collect the full bail amount will result in three years imprisonment.
Our Editor will be jailed for a good cause.
Marietta Lombard, the Editor of Bedfordview and Edenvale News, Joburg East Express and The Tembisan, together with several others, will be jailed to raise funds for the CANSA Keurboom Care Home.
Bail has been set at R10 000, or a sentence of three years in jail will be enforced if the full amount is not collected. She will be jailed along with others supporting the worthy cause in a mobile jail at the Park Meadows Shopping Centre on November 14.
Keurboom
Keurboom is situated in Belgravia and it accommodates up to 28 cancer patients. Mrs Sandi van Tonder said Keurboom was donated to Cansa in 1975 by Rotary South Africa.
“This was to create a ‘home from home’ facility for patients undergoing treatment for cancer at the various hospitals in the province. They added a wing to the house consisting of 10 bedrooms which could accommodate 20 patients. Keurboom currently accommodates up 28 patients at one given time,” she said.
She said some patients come from as far as Springs, Randfontein, Carletonville and even Polokwane.
“The patients are accommodated in a friendly and loving environment. They are accommodated from Monday to Friday. They are taken to, and from, hospital and receive three healthy meals a day,” said Mrs Van Tonder.
She said most of the homes’ patients struggle to pay any fees.
“As most of the patients are unemployed due to their illness, they are unable to contribute financially for their stay at Keurboom. By hosting events like Jail and Bail, the money is raised in order to finance the running costs of the home,” she said.
She said the other personalities who will take part in this Jail and Bail initiative will include the ward 66 councillor, Clr Carlos da Rocha; Mrs Commonwealth SA 2016 Public Choice Award, Rina Burke; Mr Commonwealth SA 2016 First Runner Up, Nelius du Preez and well known local resident, Colm Burns.
