Vigilance is key – SAPS

"When going to parks, always make sure you are in large groups and cannot be overpowered should there be an incident."

Following the announcement last week that it is ready for the festive season, the Bedfordview SAPS issued a warning to residents to practice caution when making use of public spaces during the holidays.

The spokesperson for the Bedfordview SAPS, Warrant Officer Mduduzi Nhlabathi, said criminals are always on the lookout for individuals they can easily target.

He said residents must be vigilant at all times.

“When going to parks, always make sure you are in large groups and cannot be overpowered should there be an incident. Also report any behaviour that is suspicious or out of place to the police,” he said.

W/O Nhlabathi said members of the public must keep their valuable items at home or away from the full view of would-be criminals.

“Do not show off items that will be enticing to criminals. Leave them at home or safely hidden. Keep watch on children at all times to ensure their safety,” said W/O Nhlabathi.

He said residents should not remain in secluded spaces until late in the evening to eliminate the risk of falling victim to criminals.

W/O Nhlabathi also warned residents walking to and from work using pathways to be careful.

According to W/O Nhlabathi, Posselt Park in Bedford Gardens, the Bill Stuart Nature Reserve and the piece of land along Van Buuren Road are some of the spaces criminals use to target people.

“We urge those using these spaces to walk with others, even during the day. At night, avoid walking through these areas as your safety might be compromised,” he said.

W/O Nhlabathi said the police together with stakeholders, will monitor entry and exit points to Bedfordview as part of their festive season plans.
