The theft of gate motors seems to be increasing and has as a result become a concern for the Edenvale SAPS.
According to warrant officer and acting spokesperson Mr Jean Olckers, two gate motor thefts have been reported in Edenglen and one happened within an enclosed area.
“Theft of gate motors is a continuous crime and concern for the SAPS. We would therefore like to urge security at road enclosures to be alert,” said W/O Olckers.
He said members of the public who have any information with regards to where the motors are being taken or sold to contact the police.
He said the current suspect is being investigated for possible links to these thefts. However, said W/O Olckers, it is clear that more than one group is involved.
Among other concerns are the number of hijackings, thefts out of motor vehicles as well as house break-ins.
The public is urged to make use of the following tips:
- Be alert at all times and know your surroundings.
- Check for anything suspicious when approaching the driveway or leaving the driveway.
- Report suspicious-looking vehicles or people in the street.
- Know your neighbours in order to create greater awareness.
- Motorists should refrain from parking outside their homes because they are seen as soft targets.
- Ensure that the security system is operational.
- Homeowners with domestic workers should inform them of emergency contact numbers.
- Domestic workers should keep the doors and gates locked at all times.
- Residents who live in enclosed areas should also be alert as it doesn’t always ensure safety.
- Sector numbers should be given to domestic workers and homeowners so that they can be alerted.
- Suspicious vehicles and pedestrians who are not known in the area should be reported.
