Rescue efforts to free entangled goose continue
"We are busy working on an additional plan to try and capture the goose."
Two weeks later, the rescue efforts to free a goose that is entangled in fishing line at the Modderfontein Dam continue.
On February 10, the NEWS reported that the goose had been seen moving around with fishing line wrapped around its legs.
Ms Valerie van der Klis, a Modderfontein resident, said this was largely due to the fishermen’s waste around the Flamingo Dam.
At the time, she said she was trying to find a net gun or someone who can help. She said the goose had been in that state for about a month. The trouble was trying to catch it to help it.
Ms Claire Morgan, the marketing manager for Nevada, said they had contacted a number of animal charities and organisations that specialise in rescuing distressed animals. She said a number of these animal charities have already gone to the dam to try and capture the goose.
On February 18, Ms Morgan said the goose was still being monitored to ensure it is still eating.
“We are working with Ms Michelle Moll from Animal Handling Support Systems, who donated the use of the cage, which we are trying to get the goose to go into. This is one of the humane ways of catching the goose, as it would walk into the cage and it would close behind it.
She said a few geese had been successfully caught within the cage, but unfortunately these have not been the injured goose and they were released.
“We are busy working on an additional plan to try and capture the goose. We would like to appeal to any wildlife organisations that are able to assist in catching the goose to email lakeside@nevadagroup.co.za,” she said.
