Bedfordview’s one-of-a-kind wedding
Mrs Tomaz said although her husband proposed to her six years ago, they could not get married then as she was busy with a competition at her previous job.
A Sendwerwood resident defied all tradition last week when she took a leap of faith, Las Vegas style.
Mrs Sarah Tomaz organised her leap year wedding in less than half a day and married her fiancé of six years on the evening of February 29.
The NEWS caught up with Mrs Tomaz, who shared some of the highlights and memories from her intimate last-minute wedding.
She said although she’d always wanted a leap day wedding, she was ready to give up because courts demanded a lot of documentation.
“Continuing through the courts would mean I would have to tell him about my plans for the wedding and I wanted it to be a surprise. I was considering giving it up until my sister gave me a call that morning,” said Mrs Tomaz.
She said her sister gave her the contact number for Reverend Nick Prinsloo, a minister who agreed to marry them at the last minute.
She said she rushed to China City for accessories for the wedding.
Mrs Tomaz said her husband, Mr James Morland, had no idea of what she was planning.
“I gave him a call and asked if he could meet me at a secret location in Blagowire. I refused to disclose why I wanted to meet him there until he gave in. I then called my friend and asked her to bring her husband because we needed witnesses, but I also didn’t tell her why I needed them both,” said Mrs Tomaz.
She said when Mr Morland arrived she asked him if they could get married.
“He said yes and we did it,” she said.
On their way home, the couple decided to grab supper at a newly opened fast food joint in Bedfordview.
“And that was our wedding reception. We walked in while I had my veil on and the staff started singing and ululating for us. It was very magical. My friend’s husband even joked that he will pay for the reception, which was literally R100,” said Mrs Tomaz.
She said the owners of the fast food outlet promised to host a dinner for the couple on their anniversary in 2020.
“I had the most fun a girl can have on a Monday night with her groom, taking a leap of faith,” said Mrs Tomaz.
