Care centre hosts wellness day
The event was held to help create awareness of the organisation and the work it does in the community.
The Tshimangadzo Care Centre, a non-profit organisation operating in conjunction with the Trinity Group, held a wellness and information event on March 12.
The event was held to help create awareness of the organisation and the work it does in the community.
Mr Phanuel Mafidula, who is the centre manager, said the organisation was started due to the increase of poverty within areas such as Bezuidenhout Valley, Bertrams, Jeppestown, Troyville, Doorfontein and the surrounding areas.
The center is based at number 107 Derby Road in Bertrams and has been in existence for over 10 years.
“As of today, the care centre has mobilised feeding schemes, after-school feeding schemes and homeless feeding schemes. We currently offer two soup kitchens, which are hosted on Wednesdays and Sundays.
“We feed about 120 people from the adult feeding scheme, which includes senior citizens and young people. Due to the lack of resources, the center has been struggling financially and as a result we struggle to maintain the high demand from our different communities,”said Mr Mafidula.
The event was well-attended by community members who came to get information on child grants, community shelters, internships, treatment of substance abuse, pension, disability grants, alcohol and drug abuse, prevention of violence against women and children and promotion of school safety. The social development and department of health officials also attended the event. The department of health officials conducted free on-site medical male circumcision, pap smear, high blood pressure testing, HIV testing, TB screening, diabetes testing and general check-ups.
Mr Mafidula said the event was about giving society an opportunity to engage with large government entities through the Tshimangadzo platform.
“The main objective is to use the available platforms to market ourselves and our services to other potential sponsors,” he said.
