Woman charged with crimen injuria for race slurs

He said while officers asked the motorist questions, her mother interfered and racially attacked the officers.

An Edenvale woman was arrested and charged with crimen injuria and interfering with police duties last Thursday.

The spokesperson for the Bedfordview SAPS, Warrant Officer Mduduzi Nhlabathi, said the woman was arrested on the Edenvale off-ramp along the R24.

“Metro police officers were driving along the highway, also known as the Albertina Sisulu Freeway, when they came across a car in the fast lane. They used blue lights and sirens to signal for the driver to move so that they could pass. When she eventually moved, the suspect, who was a passenger, made faces and started swearing at the officers, who then stopped the motorist,” said W/O Nhlabathi.

He said while officers asked the motorist questions, her mother interfered and racially attacked the officers.

W/O Nhlabathi said residents should be aware that police are out to serve and protect them.

“Attacking and calling officers names will not do our people justice. Law enforcement officers do their best in the fight against crime and in making sure our people live in a safe environment. If sirens and blue lights are on, give them way. Allow them to get to their destination sooner. One day you could be the one in an emergency and in need of assistance from the police. So please respect officers regardless of their race and how much of a hurry you are in,” said W/O Nhlabathi.

At the time of going to press, the suspect’s next court appearance was not known.
