Holy Door opened at Little Eden
"A Holy Door or Porta Sancta has been used since the fifteenth century as a ritual expression of renewal."
On Saturday, May 7, the 98th anniversary of the birth of Domitilla, the Most Reverend Archbishop William Slattery OFM of the Archdiocese of Pretoria celebrated Holy Mass at Little Eden, Elvira Rota Village (ERV) Chapel of the Holy Family.
At this event, and under a temporal privilege extended by Pope Francis through the Papal bull of Indiction, “Misericordiae Vultus” for an ordinary bishop to designate his own Holy Door for the purpose of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, the main entrance door to the ERV Holy Family Chapel was blessed as a Holy Door.
“A Holy Door is a visual symbol of internal renewal, which begins with the willing desire to make peace with God, reconcile with one’s neighbours, restore in one everything that has been damaged in the past, and reshape one’s heart through renewal,” said Ms Veronica Mannix public relations and communications manager of Little Eden.
“A Holy Door or Porta Sancta has been used since the 15th century as a ritual expression of renewal. Pilgrims and penitents pass through it as a gesture of leaving the past behind and crossing the threshold from sin to grace, from slavery to freedom, and from darkness to light in the Jubilee Year of Mercy” she said.
Holy Doors have been opened in over 40 countries around the world.
