Residents receive fire safety kits

The recipients of the Jozi safety kits have already been trained on basic firefighting.

In its endeavour to reduce fire incidents and fatalities caused by the unsafe use of heating and lighting appliances, the City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services, through PIER, handed over the Jozi safety kits to households at Jumpers informal settlement.

PIER is responsible for public education in the organisation and the hand over took place on July 5.

“The recipients of the Jozi safety kits have already been trained on basic firefighting and basic first aid, with the aim of empowering them to deal with some of the emergencies before we arrive on scene. This is part of our initiative of building resilient communities, communities who are capable of dealing with any emergency which might occur in their areas,” said Johannesburg Emergency Management Services spokesperson, Mr Robert Mulaudzi.

The safety kit consists of a parasafe stove, a burn kit to treat minor burns, a solar lantern light, a paraffin container with a safety cap, a smoke detector, fire retardant spray and a 25 litre bucket to store water, which can be used as an extinguishing agent.
