Democracy in action

The heart of South Africa’s democracy was pumping on August 3 as residents mingled in long queues at Kensington Ridge Primary School for the local government elections.

The queue at this voting station was quite long by 9am, with a few complaints about the queue not moving fast enough.

“It is important to vote. We did not have the opportunity to vote before 1994. I hope every resident in Malvern voted to ensure we make a difference,” said Mrs Nelly Mkhize (56).

Another voter, Mr Jabu Ncala, said it was important to vote and make a mark.

“Every citizens’ vote counts,” he said.

Meanwhile, the voting station at Jeppe High School for Girls was quiet at the time of the EXPRESS’ visit, with only a few people voting at the station.
