“A girl child must not walk with fear that there is a rapist behind her.”

In celebration of Women’s Day, the Johannesburg East SAPS Cluster visited the Mother Teresa Home in Yeoville.

The members handed out gifts to the women and children on August 10.

The cluster commander, General Dimakatso Ndaba, said women are vulnerable to most serious crimes and the SAPS must ensure that the rights of women are protected.

She said much needs to be done to bring gender equality.

“A girl child must not walk with fear that there is a rapist behind her.”

She urged women to stand together and fight against crime.

August 9, 2016, marked the 60th commemoration of one of the largest demonstrations staged in this country’s history.

20 000 women of all races marched to Pretoria’s Union Buildings on August 9, 1956, to present a petition against the carrying of passes by women to the prime minister, JG Strijdom.
