Boy, 6, dies after being electrocuted by an illegal connection

He was playing with his peers when their ball fell inside the sluice. It is thought that he may have been electrocuted from an illegal connection while he was trying to retrieve the ball.

Six-year-old Nkosimphile Dlamini died on August 26 in a sluice at Main Reef Road in Denver.

He was playing with his peers when their ball fell inside the sluice. It is thought that he may have been electrocuted from an illegal connection while he was trying to retrieve the ball.

“He was going to fetch the ball they were playing with. The friends did not understand – they thought he was acting dead when he was inside the sluice.

“They screamed and said to him ‘Vuka uyilalisile’ [wake up and stop playing dead].

“One of the residents was going to the shops when he saw children screaming.

“He got inside the sluice and took our son out of there. He asked construction people who were working in the street if they could help him. They took him to his parent’s house,” said Nkosimphile’s aunt.

“We rushed to take him to the hospital. We took him to the Malvern fire station but it was already too late by then. We wanted to save our Nkosimphile,” said Nkosimphile’s aunt.

Nkosimphile was a grade 1 learner at Denver Primary School.

“He was a very well-known boy here at Denver. He loved talking and playing. He was an intelligent boy,” said his aunt.

The funeral took place on September 4 in KwaZulu-Natal.
