UPDATE: Shoot-out suspect under police guard in hospital

The suspect was in a critical condition, but had been stabilised before being taken to hospital.

One of the suspects arrested during yesterday’s robbery and shoot-out is under police guard at Tembisa Hospital.

This according to spokesperson for the Bedfordview SAPS, Captain Andre de Jager.

He said the two men were arrested after robbing a woman of her jewellery and cellular phone.

“The victim was followed from Eastgate Shopping Centre where she had been shopping. They robbed her along Chester Road.

“Her husband then fired shots. Upon fleeing the scene, the suspects knocked down the locked enclosure gate on Chester Road to exit onto Bowling Road where they crashed and abandoned their car and fled on foot towards Pine Road,” said Capt de Jager.

He said on-scene information suggested that the suspects left their accomplice at the Daws Avenue boom entrance and the accomplice held the guard who was on duty at gunpoint.

“The guard managed to press his panic button and within seconds, armed response arrived. A shoot-out ensued. The suspect hijacked a contractor’s bakkie and fled the scene.

“Although he was not arrested yet, the bakkie was recovered within an hour in Primrose,” said Capt de Jager.

He said the items taken during the robbery were recovered.
