Edenvale, Bedfordview and Sebenza police stations under resourced – Waters

Waters said the three stations are all lacking vehicles.

According to the Democratic Alliance, three local police stations are understaffed and lack resources.

According to Member of Parliament, MP Mike Waters, the Bedfordview, Edenvale and Sebenza police stations do not have sufficient resources at their disposal.

MP Waters said the Bedfordview Police Station’s Visible Policing Unit is short 24 officers, while both the Edenvale and Sebenza police stations are short 16 officers for visible policing.

In addition to the claims, MP Waters said the three stations are all lacking vehicles.

He said the Bedfordview Police Station is short five vehicles, while the Sebenza and Edenvale police stations need six vehicles each.

“The Sebenza Police Station is so severely under resourced that they cannot provide two visible policing officers for the four sectors over the four shifts. Sebenza needs a minimum of eight police officers to provide visible policing and currently it only has four officers,” said MP Waters.

He said the Bedfordview Police Station is facing a similar issue and has six officers per sector for the four shifts, but the station needs a minimum of eight officers.

“Ideally each sector should have two vehicles with two officers per vehicle with a total of four shifts. However, none of these police stations in the area currently meet these requirements,” said MP Waters.

“By increasing the number of officers, crime can be prevented before it occurs.”

He said this will also assist the detectives who, according to him, all exceed the maximum number of 45 cases a detective is supposed to work on at a given time.
