Renewal of firearm licences

Cleveland police have urged residents to renew their firearm licenses.

In terms of Section 24 of the Firearms Control Act (60 of 2 000):

• The holder of a firearm license who wishes to renew the license must apply to the registrar for its renewal at least 90 days before the date of expiry of the license.
• Applications for renewal may, however, be considered if the application is lodged in less than 90 days. In this case, the reasons for the late application must be provided on the application form.
• When a person wants to renew or apply for a license and the validity of the license has already expired, the person must be informed that he/she is not in lawful possession of the firearm anymore and that the firearm must be surrendered to the nearest police station.
• If the firearm is surrendered voluntarily, the owner will not be prosecuted.
