Safe pets and happy owners

With the festive season almost upon us, a number of community members and pet owners might be going away for the holidays

With the festive season almost upon us, a number of community members and pet owners might be going away for the holidays.
The Edenvale SPCA urged community members to ensure their pets are well looked after and are in good care while they are away.
“It is important for pet owners to make arrangements and to make plans for their pets before they go away,” said Inspector Jade Nel, from the Edenvale SPCA.
Inspector Nel said there are a number of ways in which pet owners can do this.
She said pet owners must not leave pets unattended and should rather make plans with a recommended pet-sitter or with their neighbours.
“It is a good thing to know your neighbours and just ask them to keep an eye on your pet,” said Inspector Nel.
Other tips pet owners can use to keep their dogs safe when they are away from home for a few hours or days include:
* Ensure that your dogs have food and water, or someone to supply them with it.
* Make sure your dog will not get bored and has enough toys.
* Microchip your dog and make sure it has an identity tag on its collar.
* Sterilise your dog, as they are less likely to be stolen.
* Keep your dogs away from the front gate as criminal elements might befriend the dogs to gain access to the property.
Inspector Nel said the best way for pets to be safe while residents are away is by organising a neighbour or a friend to check on the house and the pets.
