The Huggy Bears Nursery School Christmas tree is up and it is nothing short of amazing.
Principal, Ms Lisa Lisa Correia, built the tree from plastic soda bottles.
She asked parents to donate their empty two litre bottles.
“Upon receiving the bottles I started the work and built the tree. I cut all the tops and took them to a plastic recycling plant and used the bottoms. I then spray painted them,” said Ms Correia.
Ms Correia started making Christmas trees for her school from 2013.
“The first tree was made from empty cans, which were also donated by the parents. In 2014, I used 500ml bottles of soda. Last year I made a tree using plastic bags. It’s all about reusing and recycling,” said Ms Correia.
Ward 20 councillor, Clr Jill Humphreys, said she is proud of the work done by Ms Correia.
“It is not only about recycling. It is also about reducing the amount of waste we dump at landfill sites. These are full and cannot take any more waste. Something has to give. We need to change the way we do things and start reusing recyclable materials,” said Clr Humphreys.
The tree is at the school’s parking lot.
