Mkhululi Chonco, a high profile criminal, appeared in Johannesburg High Court on 7 February on 128 charges including murder, rape and robbery.
The 27-year-old has been in police custody since May 2014 but his trial only officially started in October last year. According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), 53 witnesses had testified against Chonco.
Spokesperson for the NPA, Phindi Louw said, “We have about at least 80 complainants in this matter, so the State will continue in leading evidence through other complainants and obviously State witnesses like your ballistic experts and your DNA experts from the forensic lab.”
Chonco has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.
The NPA said it was not clear whether he was operating as part of a syndicate.
