Healthy music

KENSINGTON – Sounds of Jozi encouraging a healthy lifestyle.

The Sounds of Jozi, an urban youth choir based in Kensington, is embarking on a fitness programme to encourage a healthy lifestyle in the community.

“The choir is all about youth empowerment. We try to always have programmes that will get our youth off the streets and try to put an end to the drug abuse. The purpose of this fitness programme is to put a final stop to the stigma that artists are drug abusers, and that is all they will ever amount to. We are trying to better our physiques and live healthy lives because we promote healthy artists and we want the community to also be part of the wonderful programme,” said choir spokesperson, Sibusiso Mtshali.

The choir was established in 2013 and has been growing ever since. Mtshali said it is important to get the community of Kensington and surrounding areas involved in the programme and encourage a healthy society.

On 18 February the choir kickstarted the fitness programme by visiting the Avalon Association, which is a home for the disabled in Kensington. Mtshali said the day was a success and the choir and residents enjoyed themselves.

“It was enjoyable and professional because our trainer is a mixed martial arts champion. He was a bit strict with us, but the overall experience was great,” said choir member Sibongakonke Makhathini.

Mtshali said choir members are happy with how the fitness programme is going and they hope the community will support them and become healthy. He also thanked Dream and Hustle Studios based in Bez Valley, empowered by BMJ Corporations, for supporting them in their fitness venture.

The community can expect a lot of wonderful things from the choir this year, said Mtshali.
