East Rand Mall to host National Cupcake Day for Kids with Cancer

Cupcakes of Hope’s National Cupcake Day will bring Cupcake Angels together to raise funds and awareness on September 26.

Residents of Ekurhuleni are invited to support this year’s National Cupcake Day for Kids with Cancer at East Rand Mall on September 26.

The event will take place at the Foschini Court from 09:00 to 17:00, as part of the national fundraising initiative organised by Cupcakes of Hope.

This year, the organisation aims to sell at least 200 000 cupcakes at more than 80 shopping centres across the country, with schools, workplaces and communities also expected to join the initiative.

Held during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, the annual event aims to raise awareness about childhood cancer while generating funds to provide practical, emotional and financial support to children with cancer and their families.

Cupcake Angels

On September 26, thousands of South Africans are expected to become “Cupcake Angels” by baking, selling and sharing cupcakes to help make a difference in the lives of children affected by cancer.

Since 2012, Cupcakes of Hope has provided support to families navigating childhood cancer.

Last year alone, the organisation supported more than 140 children every month, approved almost 2000 requests for financial assistance and delivered 3766 hospital care bags to children in all 21 paediatric oncology wards across South Africa.

“When a child is diagnosed with cancer, life changes instantly for the whole family,” says Sandy Cipriano, founder of Cupcakes of Hope.

“Parents suddenly find themselves travelling long distances for treatment, taking time away from work and facing expenses they never expected. We can’t take away a child’s diagnosis, but we can help ease some of the practical, emotional and financial pressures so families can focus on what matters most, their child. Every Cupcake Angel helps make that possible.”

Last year, more than 2400 Cupcake Angels helped raise more than R2m to support children with cancer and their families.

This year, Cupcakes of Hope hopes to attract even more volunteer bakers as the need for support continues to grow.

Becoming a Cupcake Angel is simple. Volunteers can register online, choose a participating shopping centre and pledge to bake 24 cupcakes.

Those who are not bakers can still contribute by supporting their local Cupcake Angel stall and sharing the campaign using #BakeADifference with friends and family.
