Suspect arrested in connection with hijacked vehicle

JOBURG – A suspect is expected to appear in court on a charge of hijacking.

Members of the Metro police’s K9 unit arrested a suspect who allegedly hijacked a vehicle on the corner of Derrick Avenue and Marcia Street in Cyrildene on 24 April.

The complainant was on his way to work in his Hyundai when two men in a white Mazda Hatchback allegedly hijacked him.

According to the spokesperson for Cleveland Police Station, Captain Johan Jordaan, “The two suspects got out of their Mazda and allegedly pointed a pistol [at the complainant], ordered him out of the vehicle and forced him to lie on the ground.”

Jordaan said one of the suspects searched the complainant and allegedly took his cellphone. “One suspect then jumped into the [Mazda] Ix35 and drove away. The other suspect jumped into the white Mazda and drove in the opposite direction,” said Jordaan.

Metro police officials received a complaint about the hijacking the same day. “The two officers who were driving in an unmarked vehicle immediately proceeded to the given address where they saw the vehicle with nobody inside. They parked not far from the vehicle and observed it,” said Jordaan. Jordaan said a man walked past the officials and climbed into the vehicle after a while. “The suspect started the car and just when he wanted to drive away, Metro police officials blocked his way and arrested him,” said Jordaan.

The suspect was taken to Cleveland Police Station where he was taken into custody for the possession of a hijacked vehicle. Details: Cleveland Police Station 011 677 5783.
